Browse Programs Admission InformationThe Master’s program in Literature and Civilization offers an in-depth education focused on the study of literary texts and cultural dynamics across historical periods and geographic areas. Spanning three semesters of coursework, the program aims to develop critical, analytical, and methodological skills in literary analysis, while contextualizing texts within their historical, social, and intellectual frameworks. This is achieved through core, methodological, and exploratory course units. The transversal course units include practical skills such as an introduction to digital humanities and preparation for professional integration. The fourth semester is devoted to the completion of a master's thesis, considered as an initiation into scientific research. This master’s program is thus intended for students seeking careers in academia, culture, or intellectual mediation.
-Basic coursework is required in order to successfully pursue the more advanced content of the Master’s program:
-History of literature: classical, modern, and contemporary.
-Literary theory, literary essay writing, close reading, textual analysis, and commentary.
-University research methodology and academic writing techniques: developing a research question, formulating hypotheses, structuring an outline, conducting bibliographic research, and synthesizing sources.
-History of ideas and cultural movements.
-Comparative literature: relationships between literatures from different languages or cultures.
-Cultural and identity representations: gender, postcolonialism, memory, otherness.
-Digital humanities applied to literature: digital publishing, AI-assisted textual analysis.
-Writing and mass media: literature and film, painting, music, and digital media.
Students holding a Bachelor's degree in French language or an equivalent qualification are eligible for admission.
